Moodle 5.3 LTS: what’s new and how to prepare your virtual classroom in Colombia

In this article

Moodle released Moodle LMS 5.3 LTS on October 5, 2026. The release changes course navigation, improves assessment workflows and expands AI options. For a school in Barranquilla or a university elsewhere in Colombia, the upgrade decision starts with two questions: what needs to work better in your virtual classroom, and can your current setup support the change?

Moodle LMS is an open-source learning management system for organizing courses, enrolling learners, collecting assignments, assessing work and tracking progress. LTS stands for long-term support. Moodle lists October 4, 2027 as the end of general support for the 5.3 branch and October 1, 2029 as the end of security support. Use these dates to plan with academic and IT staff.

What’s new in Moodle 5.3 for educators and learners?

Course navigation. Moodle adds linear navigation options for moving between course items. Use them to help learners see what comes after a reading or activity. In a pilot, ask a learner to find the next assignment on a phone and see whether they can do so without help.

Assessment and grading. Quizzes support due dates, and the release extends grading and review workflows for assignments. Before changing a live exam, use a test course to check dates, attempts and grades with both teacher and student roles.

AI in the virtual classroom. The release adds Anthropic Claude as a provider option and a course-level AI usage report. Available actions depend on the provider and permissions. For a pilot with summaries or drafts, use approved materials, check what data goes to the provider and decide who reviews the output.

Three ways to use Moodle for virtual classrooms in Colombia

Schools. Organize classrooms by grade and subject. In a science unit, post a short study guide, add an H5P activity and collect evidence using Assignment. Set completion criteria so learners can see what remains and teachers can identify who needs help.

Universities. Test a full workflow in a subject that uses cohorts or groups. For example, enroll a group from the student information system, open a Forum, run peer review in Workshop and check that grades appear in the gradebook. If you use institutional sign-in or LTI tools, test with accounts in both roles.

Technical and technological institutes. Combine practice with evidence. A learner can review a procedure in Lesson, upload a video of their practice and receive an assessment using a rubric. An instructor can review progress against the competencies and criteria set for the module.

Can you upgrade directly to Moodle 5.3?

The direct upgrade path starts at Moodle 4.4 or later. For an older version, identify a compatible intermediate upgrade path. Moodle 5.3 requires PHP 8.3 or later and the Sodium extension. The release notes list PostgreSQL 17, MySQL 8.4 and MariaDB 11.4 as minimums for those database engines. Verify your exact environment and release requirements with your hosting provider.

Check the site theme. Moodle removed Classic from core, and sites using it switch to Boost on upgrade. If your campus uses a custom theme, check sign-in, menus, course pages and contrast on a copy. Inventory certificate, payment, live-class and authentication plugins. Confirm compatibility and who maintains each integration.

How to prepare for an upgrade

1. Identify critical workflows. Record your Moodle version, hosting, plugins and academic blackout dates. Prioritize access, enrollment, exams, grades and certificates. If you sell courses, include the flow from confirmed payment to enrollment.

2. Restore a copy in a test environment. Include the database, campus files and configuration. Use anonymized data where possible and disable live notifications or connections that could affect students or external services. Record how to roll back and how long a restore takes.

3. Test with a representative course. Ask a teacher and a learner to sign in, find an activity, submit a file and check the grade. Verify notifications, reports and agreed external workflows. Compare enrollments and grades before and after the upgrade.

4. Schedule the change. Agree on a maintenance window with academic staff, inform users and assign responsibility for launch and rollback. After reopening the campus, check scheduled jobs and critical workflows with test accounts.

If you’re launching a virtual classroom from scratch

Start with one course and decide who enrolls, what activity demonstrates learning, and what report your team needs. Use the pilot to size hosting, select modules and decide whether you need a student system integration, payments in Colombia or a custom plugin. For a quote, share your institution type, estimated concurrent users and the workflows the platform must support.
